DNV-RP-F123 Hydrogen pipeline systems

Recommended practice

Edition 2026-03

This recommended practice (RP) provides recommendations for the design, construction, re-qualification, and operation of hydrogen pipeline systems related to structural integrity. This document is intended to be read and used in conjunction with the requirements in the referenced pipeline standards.

The following topics are covered:

  • Safety aspects related to the transportation of hydrogen gas in pipelines
  • Concept development, design premise, and system design
  • Materials and pipeline design
  • Construction
  • Operation
  • Re-qualification

This RP addresses the effect of hydrogen on the material properties of C-Mn steel line pipe and connecting welds. It does not include requirements for components making up a typical hydrogen pipeline system, such as bends, fittings, flanges, valves, connectors, joints, anchor flanges, buckle arrestors, pig traps, and couplings.
